In the present invention, there is disclosed a pyrimidine derivative of the general formula I-a, wherein -be1=be2-C(Re2a)=be3-be4= represents -CH=CH-C(Re2a)=CH-CH=, -N=CH-C(Re2a)=CH-CH=, -CH=N-C(Re2a)=CH-CH=, -N=CH-C(Re2a)=N-CH=, -N=CH-C(Re2a)=CH-N=, -CH=N-C(Re2a)=N-CH=, -N=N-C(Re2a)=CH-CH=, q is 0, 1, 2; or also 3 or 4; Re1 denotes hydrogen; aryl; formyl; alkylcarbonyl containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms in the alkyl moiety; an optionally substituted alkyl containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms; alkyloxycarbonyl containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms in the alkyloxy moiety; and other, Re2a represents CN or aminocarbonyl; Re2 denotes a halogen, alkyl containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms, CN or aminocarbonyl; L can optionally be a substituted alkyl containing 1 to 10 carbon atoms, alkenyl having 2 to 10 carbon atoms or alkynyl containing 2 to 10 carbon atoms or cycloalkyl having 3 to 7 carbon atoms; or L denotes -X-Re3 wherein Re3 is optionally substituted phenyl, pyridinyl, pyrimidinyl, pyrazinyl or pyridazinyl; X represents -NRe1-, -NH-NH-, -N=N-, -O-, -C(=O)-, -CHOH-, -S-, -S(=O)- or -S(=O)i2-; Q denotes hydrogen, alkyl containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms, halo, polyhaloalkyl having 1 to 6 carbon atoms in the alkyl moiety or -NRe4Re5; an optionally substituted amino group; Y represents hydroxy, halo, cycloalkyl containing 3 to 7 carbon atoms and other, the N-oxides, the pharmaceutically acceptable addition salts, quaternary amines and the stereochemically isomeric forms thereof. Further disclosed is the use of the above-indicated compound for the treatment of subjects suffering from HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection. Also disclosed is a pharmaceutical composition containing the above described pyrimidine derivative, process for its preparation and intermediates of the general formula IV. The use of the compound of the general formula I, in which -ae1=ae2-ae3=ae4- denotes -CH=CH-CH=CH-, -N=CH-CH=CH-, -N=CH-N=CH-, -N=CH-CH=N-, -N=N-CH=CH-, n is 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4, and in case the ae1=ae2-ae3=ae4- denotes -CH=CH-CH=CH- n can be 5, R1, R2, L, R3, Q, Y are as specified above, the N-oxide, the pharmaceutically acceptable addition salt, quaternary amine forms thereof for the preparation of a medicament for the treatment of subjects suffering from HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection. A combination containing the above-described pyrimidine derivative of the general formula I-a or I and another antiretroviral compounds for use as a medicament. A product containing pyrimidine derivatives of the general formula I-a or I and another antiretroviral compound, as a combined preparation for simultaneous, separate or sequential use in anti-HIV treatment.
